As vitiligo is a skin disorder in which smooth white patches occur on the skin. It usually begins with small white patches but later can spread over a whole body within a few months. It can develop on any part of the body even on mucous membranes, (including the moist lining of the mouth, nose, genital, and rectal areas) and then on the eyes and the inner side of the ears. But it typically begins on the face, hands, forearms, and feet. What happens usually is that the larger patches remain in the same place for years but sometimes, they continue to widen and spread. Treatment of vitiligo involves restoring skin tone or at least slowing down the process because no treatment is out there that we can say, can stop the process of vitiligo.
Some treatments that consider in restoration are;
PROTECTION FROM THE SUN
Sunburn can prove to worsen if you have vitiligo as when you expose your skin in front of the sun, it produces melanin which helps to protect the skin from ultraviolet (UV) light. However, there is already not enough melanin in your skin in vitiligo, so it will not be protected. To avoid sunburn, always have your sunscreen on, /with SPF 30 or more. Moreover, a shortage of sun exposure will result in a deficiency of vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential to keep your bones and teeth healthy. So, some vitamin D-containing foods such as oily fish and vitamin D supplements can be a substitute for the sun in this regard.
CAMOUFLAGE CREAMS
Camouflage creams work on the skin to hide the white patches. They come in different shades to match your skin tone. The cream blends into your skin, so cannot be as much visible. Camouflage creams come with a waterproof tendency and last for up to 4 days on the body and 12 to 18 hours on the face. But anyway it is a temporary solution in the end.
TOPICAL STEROIDS
Topical steroids come in the form of any cream or lotion. They sometimes can help to stop the spreading of white patches and may help to restore your original skin color. Topical steroids are recommended if you are not satisfied with sun protection and camouflage creams. Along with benefits, these steroids also have side effects which include;
- Striae -stretch marks
- Atrophy- skin thinning
- Hypertrichosis- excess hair growth
- Telangiectasia- appearing blood vessels
PHOTOTHERAPY Treatment of Vitiligo
Phototherapy is the treatment of vitiligo with light where your skin is exposed to ultraviolet A (UVA) or ultraviolet B (UVB) light from a special lamp. This treatment is also called PUVA as it includes psoralen medicine and UVA light. You should keep in mind while saying yes to phototherapy that due to extra exposure to UVA, the chances of skin cancer increase. So rather than being a powerful form of medicine, it can prove as the slowest form of poison.
ORGANIC TREATMENT
Organic vitiligo treatment involves ingredients like Cullen Corylifolium, Berberis Vulgaris, Nigella sativa seeds, and Virgin coconut oil
